Update: Here is John Edwards' statement after his court appearance today.

John Edwards has arrived at the federal courthouse in North Carolina with his daughter Cate.

The unnamed staffer in the Indictment who claimed John Edwards knew of Fred Baron's payments to Rielle Hunter during the campaign is reportedly Wendy Button. She didn't include that detail in her article on helping draft the statement admitting paternity (which wasn't used.) [More...]

Sen. Kay Hagen today has asked the Judiciary Commmittee to allow Obama's nominee for U.S. Attorney, Thomas Walker, to go forward, saying Republican holdover George Holding's work is now complete. The other N.C. Senator isn't quite ready.

    how they will be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he orchestrated this cover-up to benefit his campaign, rather than to hide his extramarital affair from his family. Don't most people try to hide an extramarital affair from the family?

    He could probably call Arnold to testify to that. I think the prosecutors have overreached as usual.  They probably kick people when they are down and tear the wings off butterflies.  Can't say I admire JE at all, but this is yet another waste of federal tax dollars.

    angry about this Indictment as he is, and fully supports him -- not humiliated at all. She is a lawyer and the charges are unprecedented.

    She didn't look either pathetic or humiliated or reluctant to me, she looked p**ed.  (And honestly, I think Elizabeth would be just as p**ed.)

    I was pleasantly surprised to see Dershowitz and that rather sour gal from the ethics organization that's always suing pols in both parties up the wazoo both vehemently saying on Piers Morgan tonight that this whole thing is outrageous.

    Turns out one of the prosecutors is a one-time protege of Jesse Helms, which may be all one needs to know about why this is happening.  Dersh seemed to think there was at least some chance the judge would throw it out of court.

    It really seems to be an outrageous theory not even based on law but just on an "advisory opinion" by the FEC some years ago, one that would mean nobody running for office could ever be given anything of value for any purpose by any person under any circumstances that didn't count as a campaign contribution, which strikes me as insane on its face.  The husband of a congresswoman buys her a nice necklace or a new dress and she wears it in public, bingo, he's given her a campaign contribution.  WTF?  It's absurd.

    As Dersh says, you may not like Edwards and think he's a horrible cad, but if they can do this to him, they can do it to anybody else.

    Also, apparently the indictment itself is packed with unrelated, totaly gratuitous salacious details about the affair itself.  Sounds like these guys studied under Ken Starr to me.

    Being humiliated that your father's extramarital activities (and possibel videotape of said activities) and out of wedlock half sister (that your father refused to claim for many months) are once again going to be in the news. Just because she's a lawyer doesn't mean she can't feel humiliation by this.  And we have no idea if she thinks the charges are bogus - she could just as easily be acting as the good and loyal daughter.
