Joe Biden Picks Kamala Harris as Running Mate

Joe Biden:
I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.
They are ready to hit the ground running. In terms of picking a running mate who will bring him votes he might otherwise not receive, he made the right choice. She will enthuse and excite the base in ways he does not.[More...]

Trump will also have to be very careful in how he criticizes her, to avoid any retort he's anti-woman or racially insensitive.

On the other hand, how many closet bigoted Americans will come out of their closet to vote for Trump even if they don't like him?

I'm trying to think of something positive to say about having two career crime warriors in the White House. All I can think of is this: At least if Biden isn't able to finish his four year term for health reasons (he is 77), Kamala Harris as VP has the most relevant experience to take over at a moment's notice.

Also, good for Biden for going for the "wow" factor in making his pick. Among those on his shortlist, only Harris has it.

Reuters: How Kamala Harris Found the Political Identity That's Eluded Her . Shorter version: How Leopard Kamala Harris Changed her Spots going from crime warrior to criminal justice seeker. Is it real? How long will it last. I believe in the old adage leopards don't change their spots. Former Harris critic Laura Bazelon, who wrote the 2019 New York Times artice Kamala Harris Was Not a Progressive Prosecutor, (which everyone should read) now says:

Lara Bazelon, a professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law who last year assailed Harris’ record as a prosecutor and attorney general, said Harris has made an “important shift” on criminal justice. She now hopes Harris will become a leading adviser to Biden on the issue.

“She got a good, hard shove to the left. I really hope she seizes that moment and resists the urge to drift toward safety and the center.” Bazelon said.

Democratic strategist Joel Payne, who worked for Hillary's 2016 presidential campaign, tells Reuters:

Harris has used the time since her campaign exit well....“She realized that one of her vulnerabilities was her background as a prosecutor,” he said. “She did some repair work. She did some fence-mending to get ready for the moment.”

Kamala is ready for her moment, no doubt. But as for change, it looks like we'll have to wait for 2024. At least if they win, we'll have four years less Trump-inflicted damage to the country. And we'll be rid Trump's under-qualified offspring meddling in our national and international affairs. And the newly constituted DOJ can decide whether any offense it believes he committed hasn't run out the statute of limitations clock and if so, prepare the grand jury to issue a sealed indictment, which will be unsealed once he's a private citizen.

Her parents were both immigrants, one Black from Jamaica (a Ph.D. professor of economics at Wisconsin and then Stanford) and the other South Asian from India (a Ph.D. breast cancer researcher). She will not only be our first Black major party candidate for vice president, but also our first Asian major party candidate for president or vice president. Also interesting, she has always used her own (that is, her father's) surname; her husband is white and Jewish, who brought her two step-children.

I have said before that when the team is announced I will refrain from arguing against them (although if they misrepresent their records, I may feel I need to set the record straight.) I really do not want to see Trump re-elected. But I also shudder at the thought of these two in power as compared to the candidates who, had they been nominated, would have delivered real change to the  criminal justice system and kept that lockbox on social security and medicare. Young people have four years to wait till the next election. I don't think people my age have that luxury. I assume I'll be working for several more years, but when I stop, I hope I follow through on my plans to become an ex-pat somewhere.

by CaptHowdy on Wed Aug 12, 2020 at 07:46:00 AM EST
    6 medium bananas
    1/4 cup lemon juice
6 thin slices boiled ham (about 1/2 lb)
    3 tablespoons prepared mustard
2 envelopes (1 1/4-oz size) hollandaise sauce mix
    1/4 cup light cream

    1. Preheat oven to 400F. Lightly butter 2-quart, shallow baking dish.

    2. Peel bananas; sprinkle each with 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice, to prevent darkening.

    3. Spread ham slices with mustard. Wrap each banana in slice of ham. Arrange in single layer in casserole. Bake 10 minutes.

    4. Meanwhile, make sauce: In small saucepan, combine sauce mix with 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and cream. Heat, stirring, to boiling; pour over bananas. Bake 5 minutes longer, or until slightly golden. Nice with a green salad for brunch or lunch. Makes 6 servings.

Democrats have work to do to just get into the runoff, and if they get there, they have to deal with the same turnout problems that have beguiled them in past runoffs," Kondik wrote. "So the Republicans have a few important backstops in this race."

A regularly scheduled Senate election in the state this year -- for Sen. David Perdue's (R-Ga.) seat -- currently appears more favorable for Democrats. Sabato's Crystal Ball has that race in its "leans Republican" column, though other election handicappers, like The Cook Political Report, see it as a "toss-up."

has Ossoff losing in every poll when I checked just right now. The highest he has polled is 43% and Mammoth had Ossoff losing by 7 points. The most reliable and most recent has it 44 Perdue and 41 Ossoff. Ossoff has run a horrible campaign. All he talks about is corruption and PAC money and once in a while throws in the pandemic. People want to know what he is going to do to make their lives better and he's got nothing. I have more hope that Loeffler wins the jungle and we are up against her in the run off.

There very well may be some angry black ladies but they sure don't seem interested in voting for Ossoff. Kemp's and Trump's handling of the pandemic definitely is helping Biden here and it's actually making it hard for the GOP controlled legislature to keep their seats. But for some reason the senate race is flying under the radar with voters.

is going to have to come up 7 to 9 points to take the senate seat away from Perdue in November. If those numbers hold it will go to a runoff. The best Ossoff can hope for from that recent batch of polls is a runoff. A miracle could happen and Ossoff wins but it's not looking good for him. We possibly could have two runoffs in December or January.

If Biden starts polling at 53% in GA Ossoff has a shot to be pulled into office by Biden.

The problem is these never Trumpers will not vote for Ossoff but will vote for Perdue. That's why Biden is polling ahead of Ossoff.

well, for me anyway, this ticket serves merely as a means of voting Trump out of office.

I wish we could vote for someone who promised change. Sanders offered some semblance of hope, but he is not a fighter.

I am reminded, sadly, of the election of 2004 when  we had a chance to vote Bush out of office.
He was known to have lied to us and led us into two wars - causing death and devastation (from which we have yet to emerge). And the Democratic party presented us with Kerry and Edwards, both of whom voted for the war. So we got another 4 years of Bush.

In any case, we are forced to vote against someone instead of for a ticket that might inspire us.
I speak of course for myself. Others might find this ticket inspiring.

at least he lets us know the Russian talking points du jour. Too bad he's not aware that we're all onto them after 2016.

Couldn't happen to a nicer person

It's official: Joe Biden has selected Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate in the 2020 election. And Maya Rudolph, who played Harris during the Democratic presidential debates on Saturday Night Live, has some thoughts.

"Oh sh!t" Rudolph immediately responded upon hearing the news.

Is Harris the Most Liberal Senator? (none / 0) (#54)

Our unique ideology analysis assigns a score to Members of Congress according to their legislative behavior by how similar the pattern of bills and resolutions they cosponsor are to other Members of Congress. The score can be interpreted as a conservative--liberal scale, although of course it only takes into account a small aspect of reality.

    So for 2019 ...

    The phony "constitutional" theory behind (5.00 / 3) (#73)

this racist nonsense (endorsed today by Tr*mp, in his own backhanded way) is contrary to Supreme Court law settled for over a century, any understanding of the relevant legal history, and all serious constitutional scholarship.

Maybe this will help... (none / 0) (#72)

Maybe this will help: If Harris is VP, there is near-zero chance she'll ever be AG.

Trump will also have to be very careful in how he criticizes her, to avoid any retort he's anti-woman or racially insensitive.

Did something change?  Did his cult stop rooting for cruelty?

Besides that, there are the usual forms of criticism that end up being aimed only at women - about appearance/wardrobe, about acting in ways that are seen as forceful/aggressive/uncaring/whatever other things - all of which are seen as acceptable, or even good behavior...in men.   It allows those practicing sexism to deny their sexist beliefs and behaviors.

I'm trying to think of something positive to say about having two career crime warriors in the White House.

I do not see Biden as a career crime warrior; he is a career politician.   He aligns his principles and priorities with what he thinks his constituents want.   When the nation was in a lock-'em-up mood (e.g., when three strikes seemed like a good idea to so many of us), he carried the torch to lead the way.   I think we are in a situation where it is good to have the combination of (1)long experience - he knows the sausage recipe, (2)desire to please his constituents, and (3)willingness-to-compromise...in order to get things done.

Another reason for [a single-term cooling-off-period] Biden: I fear that a swift, radical move to the left will light a Trumpster fire - that is, a violent tantrum by those who are more enamored of so-much-winning, those who really want a world of might-makes-right, those who love some oppressive authoritarianism...as long as the right people are being oppressed.  They want to elect someone who expresses the hatred they feel.   Of course, if the right-wing media continue their scare campaigns, there may not really be a cooling-off period.
