Nancy Pelosi Re-elected Speaker of the House

Nancy Pelosi has been re-elected Speaker of the House.

Her victory means that after two years as President Trump’s most outspoken antagonist, Ms. Pelosi will now be responsible for trying to shepherd through Congress as much of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s agenda as possible.

The Dems have a pretty slim majority in the House.

On the Senate side, congrats to former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper who was sworn in today by Mike Pence . [More...]

Also on hand and celebrating the largest number of new Republican female House Members was Liz Cheney, who apparently is now the ranking female Republican House Member. She said:

“As we like to say in Wyoming, it is time to cowboy up.”

Shouldn't that have been "It's time to 'cowgirl up' "?

    Pelosi has said she will (5.00 / 2) (#1)

step down after 2 years and I hope she sticks with that promise. It is time for the Democratic Party to usher in some younger people into the power structure of the party. While Pelso has many talents, IMO her messaging is no longer as strong or as precise as it needs to be.

Across the board, members of the party need to do a better job promoting their agenda to the voters.

tenure is as reported by NPR in December 2018.

"In a deal struck with a group of House Democrats who had vowed to vote against the longtime Democratic leader in next month's House speaker election, the California lawmaker agreed to term limits that would see her hold the post through 2022 at the latest."

Pelosi stated at the time, "Over the summer, I made it clear that I see myself as a bridge to the next generation of leaders."

These troubled times for the nation can benefit from the leadership and experience Speaker Pelosi brings.  And, I look forward to President Biden's State of the Union address where two exceptional women will be sitting behind the president, for the first time in the nation's history.

This armed insurgency, this violence is the result of your choice to give these deranged conspiracy theories oxygen. Josh Hawley's book on `tyranny' cancelled -- he is a `threat to democracy and freedom': report

On Thursday, following the attack on the U.S. Capitol, publishing house Simon & Schuster announced that they would be canceling publication of an upcoming book from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO).
    ...
According to Simon & Schuster, the decision was made as a result of Hawley's role in the riot; while he did not explicitly endorse it, he spread President Donald Trump's lies about election fraud and led the charge in Congress to overturn the election, giving credence to the conspiracy theories that drove the rioters. He was also photographed waving to the rioters shortly before the attack.

Missouri has turned into such a deep (insane) red state. We've always had a Bible Belt and were slightly conservative but never this bad in the past. At one time we elected a dead man rather than elect the likes of John Ashford. John Danford, one of our successful Republican politicians, was sane and a good man even though I didn't agree with some of his policies. We voted Baby Blunt out of office due to how poorly he handled his job. Now a large segment of the state is completely bonkers.

Republicans consider drastic options to stop Trump

With 13 days left in President Trump's term, confidants and Republican officials are considering drastic steps to stop him, Jonathan Swan and Margaret Talev report.

The big picture: These measures include censure, impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment -- a move, long dismissed as a liberal fantasy, in which Vice President Pence would step in if  Trump were found to be unable to perform his duties.

This talk is coming from current and former White House and GOP Hill aides, and Republican lobbyists and political consultants -- all of whom have either embraced him or quietly tolerated him until now.
Senior State Department officials are encouraging 25th Amendment discussions along with other officials at the White House and other departments, according to two sources involved in the discussions.
The state of play: Republicans are furious with the president for what they see as fomenting an attack on American democracy, disgracing their party and invading the sanctity of their chambers on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

There's concern about whether the country can withstand another two weeks with Trump at the helm, and what additional chaos and division could be sowed.
There's also rage inside the GOP at Sens. Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz and others whose plans to object to Biden's certification gave oxygen to Trump, the protests and the notion that Congress could be used to overturn the will of voters.

    Infuriating but interesting

Former Attorney General William Barr says President Trump's conduct as a violent mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol was a "betrayal of his office and supporters," the AP reports.

Barr said that "orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable."

"Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin held informal conversations within their own agencies about the contours of the 25th Amendment, the invocation of which would begin a process to remove Trump from office," CNBC reports.

"The arguments against pursuing action were manifold. First, the legal process itself was estimated to take more than a week, negating any immediate effect it would have."

"Second, it was unclear whether the three secretaries serving in `acting' roles without Senate confirmation would be able to cast a vote. Third, they had concerns that forcing Trump from office could further stoke tensions among his base and make him a hero of the far right, doing more bad in the long-term than good in the short-term."

Said one former Trump official: "The general plan now is to let the clock run out."

I also read that if the 25th is used Trump can "object" which would then require a 2/3 vote in Congress.

Also I kind of think what's happening now is a pretty fitting end to this nightmare.  Trump alone, shunned and cornered.   Flailing and lashing out at everyone.

by CaptHowdy on Fri Jan 08, 2021 at 12:35:37 PM EST
Trump was watching tv full time now. It is being widely discussed that not only is it almost unanimously believed that a "self pardon" is illegal and unconstitutional but everyone also agrees that if he did that it would basically guarantee the Feds would indict him, for something - take your pick, because they will never allow such an abuse of power to stand.

So he may be detached and delusional, demented and dangerously unhinged but if any part of his brain is functioning, an admittedly large if, it will be the self preservation alligator part.

There are people who are going to tell him a self pardon would be the biggest mistake he has ever made.   Will he listen.  I think ultimately he will.

Tho I fervently hope he does not.  I really do.  If he self pardons we got his orange azz.

They are pushing that this wasn't Trump supporters and that Trump isn't responsible for other people's behaviors.  The idea that right wing media would take any responsibility or start reporting facts is beyond silly.

No way Trump resigns, no way democrats get the 2/3rds Senate.  No way Pence does anything to remove Trump.  It's all political theater.  I'm still curious as to why we would want to stop Trump from dividing the party even further ?  This is a time to watch the fires burn.

talk by Democratic House members appears to be, as a first pass, pressure on Trump to resign rather than be impeached again, and maybe, convicted.  Sort of the Nixon treatment---prepare articles of impeachment and wave them around.  And, as Trump might say, we'll see what happens.

And, Nixon was reminded that if impeached and removed he loses post-presidential perks, such as secret service protection, resignation became more attractive.  Paying for his own security may tip the grifter-in-chief.

As a second pass, impeachment with a trial in the senate hanging permits quick removal action in an emergency(an emergency even greater than what exists now)

"Donald Trump's most loyal supporters feel angry and betrayed over the Thursday video in which the president tried to distance himself from a pro-Trump riot in Congress, despite the president's advisers assuring him he had not alienated too many of his fans," the Daily Beast reports.

"Shortly after his White House video--in which a scripted President Trump acknowledged that a transition to a `new' administration was underway, but stopped short of even admitting that he indeed lost fairly to his 2020 Democratic opponent--posted online, Trump started having second thoughts. Throughout the evening, the outgoing, increasingly authoritarian leader of the free world quizzed close advisers and White House officials about if he did the right thing, and if the reception from the public, the media, and his supporters was `good.' ... He asked if his supporters felt let down.

    Question:
How far would the liability for felony murder extend to participants in the insurrection that resulted in the murder of the Capitol Policeman?
