Did Rudy Finally Strike Out?

Rudy Giuliani is playing dumb. He feigns surprise the FBI didn't want his hard drives with Hunter Biden's material.

As if he doesn't know the FBI is investigating his activities, not Hunter's, regarding the Ukraine.

The FBI warned him and the Trump Administration that Rudy was the target of a Russian disinformation campaign to influence the election. Update: The Washington Post and NYTimes have now retracted the allegation that Rudy was formally warned by the FBI. [More...]

I also don't think Rudy is out of the woods in the case of his indicted former business associate and friend Lev Parnas. Parnas has been providing Congress with information since his indictment, in hopes it may result in a lesser sentence -- DOJ under Trump wasn't interested in giving him a cooperation deal, according to his lawyer Joe Bondy, so Bondy went to Congress.

I wonder if that's changed under a DOJ led by Merrick Garland. And what about Victoria T? There are so many people that could, and I believe would, hand Rudy that final strike in a heartbeat if offered the chance.

House Republicans are moving closer to ousting Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) from leadership, and are already considering replacements -- including Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Ann Wagner (R-MO) and Jackie Walorski (R-IN), congressional aides tell Axios.

"The conference meets next Wednesday, May 12. Most members expect the process to oust Cheney to begin then, whether formally or informally, after some of McCarthy's top lieutenants broadened their complaints against her."

"It would take up to a two-thirds vote of the 212 caucus members to replace her -- a relatively high bar if a secret ballot is held."

just said something I agree with.  Many random factors suggest republicans might have a good year in 22.  But in a way the worst long term outcome for them might be that they narrowly win back the house and think it happened because of their great ideas for the direction of the country.  Making them even more the Trump party before the next presidential election.

It was an interesting conversation.  They said what I have been saying, which is yes some things suggest a good year for republicans but the fact is the crop of republicans who win primaries are going to make MTG look like a centrist.  And lots of them are going to lose the General.  But even more important it could allow them to win a battle and lose the war in the next election.

If republicans won the house the country will instantly be thrown into gridlock and congressional investigations of Mr Potatohead and hamburgers.  Which after two years of prosperity and growth and sane functioning government under democrats will be a stark contrast.

Trump Could Cost Republicans In 2022 and 2024

May 6, 2021 at 8:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 71 Comments

GOP pollster Frank Luntz told Kara Swisher that former President Donald Trump's campaign to undermine faith in elections could backfire on the Republican party.

Said Luntz: "I think the greater impact that -- okay, I haven't said this before. This could cost the Republicans, the majority in the House in 2022. What Donald Trump is saying is actually telling people it's not worth it to vote. Donald Trump single-handedly may cause people not to vote. And he may be the greatest tool in the Democrats' arsenal to keep control of the House and Senate in 2022."

When asked if Trump could win the presidency in 2024: "If Donald Trump runs for president as a Republican, he's the odds-on favorite to win the nomination. He could never win a general election, but I can't imagine losing a Republican primary. That's how significant he is within the GOP. And yet he's lost all of those crossover voters that would deny him the chance to win in a general election."

Also a vote is more evidence of a GOP civil war and the party being completely co opted by Trump.

Liz Cheney Says `History Is Watching Us'

May 5, 2021 at 5:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) writes in the Washington Post:

"While embracing or ignoring Trump's statements might seem attractive to some for fundraising and political purposes, that approach will do profound long-term damage to our party and our country. Trump has never expressed remorse or regret for the attack of Jan. 6 and now suggests that our elections, and our legal and constitutional system, cannot be trusted to do the will of the people. This is immensely harmful, especially as we now compete on the world stage against Communist China and its claims that democracy is a failed system."

Cheney also notes that Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) once said Trump "bears responsibility" for the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol but now "McCarthy has changed his story."

Still no 911-type Commission.  Attempts for a bipartisan study have become futile with Republicans demanding inclusion of BLM and other distractions.  Which is, actually, all to the good in that a bipartisan commission would start off compromised by Republicans in that respect for integrity of elections is a disqualified in the Republican Party.

Including seditionists and. Insurectionists in a commission trying to get to the bottom of sedition and insurrection does not auger well for getting to the bottom of it all.  A Presidential Blue Ribbon Committee needs to be appointed with dispatch.  Perhaps, one chaired by former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, David Souter, filled in with experts in law enforcement and intelligence as well as academic and business leadership.

Edelman revealed that Cheney herself secretly orchestrated an unprecedented op-ed in the Washington Post by all ten living former Defense Secretaries, including her father, warning against Trump's efforts to politicize the military," Glasser reported.

"The congresswoman not only recruited her father but personally asked others, including Trump's first Defense Secretary, Jim Mattis, to participate. 'She was the one who generated it, because she was so worried about what Trump might do,' Edelman said. 'It speaks to the degree that she was concerned about the threat to our democracy that Trump represented.' The Post op-ed appeared on January 3rd, just three days before the insurrection at the Capitol," she reported.

We talked about voting. She said her generation does everything via tech. She has never written a check. As soon as you can vote using tech, she's says they will all vote. But as to politics she says her generation has grown up watching no accountability for terrible deeds. She says the news covers spats, treats gossip like it is news, and those in power get away with illegalities all the time. She said it is hard to care about any of it. Just duck your head and live your life.

What do you think she will do? Do you think she will start another party, leave the GOP or stay? Apparently she has money backing her which apparently the insurrectionists do not. Lindsaybelle was just on TV whining about how nobody was giving them money.

a "fabrication." Perhaps you did not read yesterday's in-depth exposition by the WaPo of how it came about that they published this erroneous story. Because they are real journalists, who would independently investigate and publish a self-examination. Their reporter was misled by a well-placed source (presumably an FBI agent). The reporter did not make it up; they just published something that they had failed to corroborate ... as journalists all-too-often do with "law enforcement sources." And of course, the most important fact was true: Giuliani was in fact the target of a Russian propaganda influence campaign. The issue is only that the FBI after considering warning him about how he was being used, ultimately decided not to because he was the subject of a criminal investigation, which they feared compromising. How is this supposed to make Giuliani look better, and how would publishing that erroneous story (which named him as a victim) constitute a libel of him, as he now absurdly claims?

    Interesting story from legal-English etymology (none / 0) (#31)
by Peter G on Mon May 03, 2021 at 07:22:23 PM EST
"Allocution" derives from "allocutus," which in medieval legal Latin, as used in early English courts, referred specifically not to the prisoner's speech addressed to the judge, but actually the opposite.  Allocutus was the formal requirement that before imposing a sentence of death (which at the time was the penalty for all felonies) the judge had to address the prisoner (who at that time had no  right to testify in his own defense) and ask whether s/he had anything to say before judgment was pronounced. That was the prisoner's opportunity to plead one of the few defenses to capital punishment, to wit, pregnancy, insanity, benefit of clergy, and royal pardon. The ritual was mandatory, and if judge did not perform it, no execution could be carried out.

I think "rino" means "they are not doing what I think they should be doing". There is no logic, rhyme or reason to it because everyone to the left of Ted Cruz gets called a rino.

CNBC has done some digging into the deli and the mysterious firms and investors linked to it. Here are some recent stories:

Federal Judge Dismisses NRA Bankruptcy Case

May 11, 2021 at 5:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

"A federal judge dismissed the National Rifle Association's bankruptcy case on Tuesday, in a blow to its embattled chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, that cast further doubt about his ability to remain at the helm," the New York Times reports.

"The N.R.A. had filed for bankruptcy in January in an attempt to circumvent regulatory action in New York by the state's attorney general, Letitia James, who is seeking to shut down the group amid a corruption investigation. Ms. James had challenged the validity of the bankruptcy filing."

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) was removed from her House GOP leadership post by a voice vote.

Washington Post: "The voice vote to remove her as chair of the House Republican Conference underscored that the party will not tolerate disagreements with Trump, whose active support many argue is needed for the party to win the House majority in the 2022 midterm elections."

Just an hour after she was ousted from the House GOP leadership, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) sat down for an exclusive interview with Savannah Gutherie of NBC News.

Thanks to Kevin McCarthy, Cheney now has a national platform to say she's chosen her country over the Republican party.

Cheney now has a national platform to say she's chosen her country over the Republican party.

She would be speaking out about voter suppression too.  She has chosen her country over TRUMP, but IMO unless she speaks out about voter suppression she is still choosing the Republican Party line.

Liz doesn't care what you think or want.  And there is no reason to expect her to.  She clearly is doing what she thinks is right.  Which coincidentally, IMO, is right.

Giving her credit for doing that with the background of cowardice and corruption we have here doesn't really seem that hard.

How Palm Beach is preparing for a possible Trump indictment

: PALM BEACH MAKES CONTINGENCY PLANS IN CASE TRUMP IS INDICTED -- Law enforcement officials in Palm Beach County, Fla., have actively prepared for the possibility that Manhattan District Attorney CY VANCE could indict former President DONALD TRUMP while he's at Mar-a-Lago, according to two high-ranking county officials involved in planning sessions.

Among the topics discussed in those meetings: how to handle the thorny extradition issues that could arise if an indictment moves forward.

An obscure clause in Florida's statute on interstate extradition gives Gov. RON DESANTIS the ability to intervene and even investigate whether an indicted "person ought to be surrendered" to law enforcement officials from another state -- which means that as Mar-a-Lago prepares to close down for the season and Trump relocates to Bedminster, N.J., it isn't just the Florida heat he's leaving behind: He could lose a key piece of political protection.

"The statute leaves room for interpretation that the governor has the power to order a review and potentially not comply with the extradition notice," says JOE ABRUZZO, clerk of the Circuit Court of Palm Beach County, the official who would be in charge of opening a potential fugitive-at-large case.

may be able to delay the surrender of Trump to the state of indictment, but surrender would be very likely to happen.  It may take the Supreme Court, even this one, to make it happen.
