Trump Organization and Alan Weisselberg Indicted

Here is the 25 page Indictment of the Trump Organization and its chief officer, Alan Weisselberg.

The Indictment alleges the Trump Organization ran a tax fraud scheme for 15 years, allowing executives to evade taxes by compensating them "off the books." From the New York Times:

The 15-count indictment, which charged the Trump Organization with committing a scheme to defraud, criminal tax fraud and falsifying business records, accused the company of a long-running conspiracy to help executives, including Mr. Weisselberg, evade taxes on perks and bonuses while at the same time decreasing the company’s own tax obligations.

It also charged Mr. Weisselberg with failing to pay taxes on leased Mercedes-Benzes, bonuses and a rent-free apartment paid for by the company. The indictment also charged him with grand larceny, accusing him of essentially cheating the I.R.S. out of tax revenue.

According to the Times, the investigation continues, with Donald Trump as the next potential target.

things like, let down, and disappointment.  15 felony counts against the CFO and 10 (I think) against the Trump Org works for me.

    For now anyway.

they apparently were saying that before they completely read through everything.

But I am with you. 15 years of criminal fraud being charged is good with me.

Besides the NYT is implying Trump is probably next. Though they all have to be in danger. I am sure what ever tax fraud Weisselberg and his family did the Trumps did x 10.

that's all there is given all the talk about mail and bank fraud, as well as tax fraud, and the high powered people employed to run this.  They are saying most of what is charged in this is backed up with receipts. Not sounding like it would be all that difficult to prove.

And Weisselberg's engineered tax refunds he received, that is the killing dagger. He's fooked. Who else in the Trump org has engineered personal tax refunds?

yesterday about that award winning reporting from the Times a while back on the subject of Trumps taxes that identified exactly the same kind of scheme in paying Ivanka as a consultant.

But is it legal to be a W-2 employee and also a 1099 contractor? I don't know the answer to that, but I suspect you can. I think that may have only been unethical, not necessarily illegal.

Trump org is a conglomerate of over 500 LLCs. Without that spreadsheet, nailing him was always going to be like nailing jello. But they kept a spreadsheet of breaking the law lolololol

And then, so far, we know Weisselberg used those crimes to engineer tax refunds for himself. Another crime.

"This is a grifter from start to finish. He brought his swamp from New York with him to the Oval Office. This is a guy who used his charitable foundation as a political slush fund. [...] Everything about Donald Trump's life, everything about his every day in office, spells corruption. So, none of this is surprising, it's just the same kind of grift in private practice that he imported to the White House."
    - Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell," MSNBC (June 30, 2021)

... that Donald Trump's worst-ever business decision was actually his candidacy for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, which no doubt had the wholly unintended effect of focusing public attention like a laser beam on his very questionable ethics and practices.

Trump mostly got away with that stuff when he operated at the level of popular A-list celebrity. But he failed to recognize that the standards by which he'd be judged shifted when he became first a presidential candidate and then later, president.
