Report: Reid to Join Feingold in Blocking Patriot Act

Raw Story reports in an exclusive that Sen. Harry Reid will vote against cloture on the Patriot Act renewal legislation.

Reid has told aides he will vote against cloture -- a Senate procedure which requires that 60 senators support a bill being brought before the Senate before it is brought to a final vote. In essence, voting against cloture means supporting a filibuster.

This is a really bad bill, both from a civil liberties and and a criminal justice standpoint.

    Hey, Jim - if you filibuster a bill with virtually no public support, is it still undemocratic?

    This is the beauty of the time limits given to the original 'Patriot Act'. The tagging of sales of decongestents to the PA to avert methamphetamine production is not only opportunist but a bit scary. A bit of 'mission creep'. I would support a filibuster to avoid such over-reach but I still support many parts of the 'Patriot Act'. Some of it makes sense but the L&O types might be more prone to use this extreme version of law enforcement for thier political ends. As a Libertarian I find the political abuse of the 'PA' to be of some concern.
