Tuesday Afternoon Open Thread

For those who enjoyed my sweating over my sports investment last night, you won't get another chance tonight, as I am traveling. But, you can laugh at me without the pointing as I invested in the Wolverines (-3) over Va Tech (10 units.) I know, I know, the BIG in a bowl game? But I like this Michigan team and don't think much of Va Tech.

So, I take it that - hypothetically speaking for the sake of clarification of the "argument" - if Rick Santorum was the republican nominee and Joe Lieberman was the democratic nominee, the "lesser of two evils" crowd would either be worshipping Joe or switching parties?

Have I got that about right?

    That's Obama.

    How I met Joe Lieberman (5.00 / 5) (#20)
by Peter G on Tue Jan 03, 2012 at 05:44:52 PM EST
It is 1992, New Haven, a rally for Clinton, featuring Hillary in person, under a tent in the Italian neighborhood of town, and featuring New Haven's famous pizza from Pepe's and Sally's.  With our three girls, then 10, 6, and 2, we have staked out a little table and gotten our pizza.  When we had barely begun to munch, we see it is time to hit the rope line for a photo op of the girls greeting Hillary.  We make a break for the rope, get our pix.  When we return to the table, there is U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, sitting with a couple of friends or family (can't remember who or how many), eating our pizza.  Trying to be nice, we point out that he has sat down at our table and has commenced eating our children's supper.  He denies it, and resumes munching. My opinion of him, formed at that time, has never changed, nor have I seen the slightest reason to change it.

is very interesting, offering intelligent new faces, a pleasant change from the likes of Howard Fineman et al.  Regulars Ben Mankiewicz (son of Frank, JKF's press secretary) is particularly good, as is Michael Shure.  The guests are good, from a "recovering Republican" new comer to the show, to always insightful, Glen Greenwald.   It is true, that Cenk can get emotional, but, for me, he wears a lot better than Ed Schultz.  And, he has been diversifying--a Professor from Brown University was a great addition. Also, I like Cenk's sense of integrity, leaving MSNBC on the basis that he did not want a pro-establishment show.

600-Pound Butter Cow Sculpture Wins Iowa Caucus

DES MOINES, IA--With a majority of precincts reporting, sources have confirmed a 600-pound recreation of a dairy cow sculpted entirely from freshly churned butter has won the 2012 Iowa Caucus.
    [snip]
"For one thing, I'm more familiar and comfortable with the butter cow," said Iowa voter Horace Wright, who cited the creamy sculpture's even demeanor, its pro-agriculture agenda, and the fact that it's not Mitt Romney as his primary reasons for voting for it.

My husband had a new class yesterday and to break the ice he asked everyone if anyone got a great Christmas present.  He said nobody spoke up.

For some reason my husband hated the Lexus Christmas commercial, he asked me numerous times who gets a Lexus for Christmas?  I was busy.  I was tired of hearing about it.  I just shrugged and moved along.

So he asks his class if anyone got a Lexus, did they get a little box that played the song when they shook it and then they knew their present was sitting in the driveway?  He said finally his class lightened up and laughed a little.  Then he asked, "Who gets a Lexus for Christmas"?  Someone yells out, "Rich People"!

My husband says he raised an eyebrow and said, "One Percenters huh"?  You guys are one percenters and NONE OF YOU got a Lexus?

What a sad story.  I can't fault the police - as horrible as it was, it looks like a justified shooting.

My son also wanted a fancy BB/airsoft gun a few years ago when he was @ Josh's age.  We didn't get one - not because of any moral objection - but because we live in a town in a fairly densely populated area ... just hard to find places to shoot it.  I actually have two rifles that I've owned since I was a teenager, but haven't fired them in years because we have to drive @ 45 minutes to find an outdoor range.  When I was a kid in small-town PA, we used to buy ammo at the town gas station and just walk out of town (gun loaded) to go target shooting in the woods.  Don't think that would go over so well, now.

But boys do love shooting and it is a great outdoor activity for someone who's limited.  It's also one of the few activities that both father and teenage son can genuinely enjoy together, unless your husband is into video games.  We took my oldest son's Scout troop to Fort Dix for a shooting event a couple years ago (.22 rifles and shotgun/skeet) - one of the most popular trips we've ever done.  All you can do give them proper instructions on how to shoot safely and keep reinforcing it - and limit access to the gun/go with him.  But it sounds like Josh has a great head-on-his-shoulders ...
