ISIS Recruits Deaf in New Video

The Islamic State released a new recruitment video today with deaf fighters using sign language asking other deaf followers to join them. It's filmed in Mosul. While one message is that being being deaf is not an excuse not to come and fight, I think there's a more subtle and deeper one. I am not going to link to it because I don't want to help ISIS spread its message, but I will discuss it and show a few screen shots.

The video has English subtitles. The fighters identify themselves as being "deaf mutes." By day, they work as ISIS "traffic police" in Mosul. It shows them very competently guiding traffic.[More...]

The first fighter says the Islamic state is expanding and the U.S. coalition, including Arab countries, can't stop them. They will come and slaughter everyone with Allah's permission. If one gets killed, others will take his place. He said his motivation was having experienced the "criminal Pershmerga" attacking Mosul and harming women and children. The second fighter threatens the Peshmerga.

They are dressed identically. When they get off traffic duty, they go to an empty field and very quickly and expertly assemble identical missiles of some sort and set them on identical portable missile stands. .

They then walk a short distance and set them off by remote control. There are people around them shouting "Allahu Akbar" and they smile and nod and each raise a finger.

As they walk away they have big smiles, their faces are a mixture of a sense of accomplishment, confidence and happiness. (For viewers who don't have a problem with ISIS bombing its enemies, it's a "feel good" moment.)

This isn't a blood and gore video designed for adrenaline junkies. It's a video aimed at those seeking acceptance and a family. Its message is "You have a home with us, we will welcome you and accept you and you will be one of us."

It's too bad the video is for ISIS. Otherwise it would be a great public service announcement for the hearing impaired, showing prospective employers that being deaf doesn't hold them back and they can do a job just as well as the non-hearing impaired, while at the same time showing fellow deaf citizens and the rest of us that the inability to hear or speak doesn't stand in the way of leading a fulfilling and joyful life.

I don't think there's any question that ISIS' appeal to recruits is the result of its savvy media production arm and its videos. Maybe Hollywood ought to think about taking its investigators off copyright infringement duty and instead of searching for illegal uploaders and downloaders, go find al Hayat's media production team and recruit them.

How could it do this? Maybe if Hollywood made similarly high quality videos aimed at recruiting the production team, and offered each member a million dollar salary, a mansion in LA and a new Toyota truck, and spread it via the internet, along with an 800 toll free number promising anonymity and free and safe passage, they'd come. Of course, DOJ and the Pentagon would have to get on board and promise immunity from prosecution and safe transport to the U.S.

Once here, they could make anti-ISIS videos that could actually compete with ISIS videos, even once ISIS is able to replace defecting media team members. Of course this won't happen because America would be too afraid they might be "lone wolves." But most "lone wolves" are also looney, and these media guys are anything but looney. They're just savvy.

like a very reasonable and realistic plan.

But, why stop there? Why not offer a million dollars a mansion and a brand new truck   to anyone who demonstrates sufficient enmity to the U.S./West (if you incorporate some competitive angle, we could even make this a really cool reality show)

I'm sure  they really just share our materialistic values and only promote the slaughter of innocents because they don't have awesome wheels and fabulous crib.

...the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, put out a commercial about 7 years ago.  It was line outside a club, and there was something with bouncers not letting people in.  Their message was we are inclusive, no one gets turned away.

Great commercial with a good message, the problem is these were the same clowns pouring money into California over Prop 8, the gay marriage amendment.  Their dollars went to exclude people from the ability to marry.

Just because ISIS is acting like they are inclusive to the handicap doesn't in any way mean they are, nor does it mean that the people creating them are some PSA savants.

Instead of bringing them here, how about we pay them to make anti-ISIS PSA's.  Their genius should ensure recruiting is a thing of the past.  Yeah, that is a joke.

...did it to ensure there was no sense of history, to wipe out the jewish culture.

But for ISIS, they are essentially wiping out their own culture, and like all the killing, they seem to be doing it because they can, which is disturbing on so many levels.

which helps to explain the repetitive, and, in my opinion, naïve, question you see posed here many times.

The question you see again, and again is, basically, "why?" Why do, seemingly intelligent, middle class, educated, westerners travel thousands of miles to sign up with outfits like ISIS? What's their beef? They're not deprived in any way, so what's the deal?

Simple.....Mankind at its finest, a license to kill, torture, exercise total, complete power over another human being. The kind of thrill not available anywhere else. Where else are you, not only allowed, but encouraged to kill a human while looking him/her in the eyes while you, and, you alone enjoy the orgiastic thrill of wrenching their life from them, up close and personal.

Let's face it, where else could a wretched loser in life be granted the ultimate power trip, killing another human, life & death, the ultimate aphrodisiac; You're G*d, Man!

many people harbor the desire to "see what it feels like" to kill another human. Having a State-sanctioned, 007 License to Kill, is a dream come true. It's a fast-track ticket for someone who is a loser-in-real life to separate him/her self from everyone else, and, become a "Somebody."

Just imagine walking into a bar, and everyone, suddenly gets quiet, and whispers, "you see that guy over there, he kills people for a living."

    Talk about instant respect!

This area fascinates me. NPR had a segment about how some of these antiquities are actually being saved and sold on the black market and the one's destroyed are plaster copies. It's hard to tell from the videos. And even if that was true, I would think it is only a fraction of the destruction.

If they think they are destroying the cultural foundations of modern society in order to establish a new cultural foundation then they are wrong. Their's will be "built" on shifting rubble and videos.

The west (not governments directly) is missing a huge opportunity to get its message out and to communicate directly with people. Images and videos are extremely powerful, along with music as ways to emotionally direct and motivate.

Images of functional, happy, inclusive groups of friends, families, and communities are the new battleground. Who gets to claim them? Hope, prosperity, having a future are up for grabs - at least in the fantasy world of media production.

One thing that ISIS productions always exclude are images of equality of females, and images of all ages and generations supporting each other. They are all completely lacking in humor. There is no lightness of life. They assume darkness and desperation are the starting points. They assume they are targeting people who consider themselves victims. They recruit in places where tolerance is starting to just begin to try to take hold, and are a call back to where tolerance is completely rejected.  The west only answers with denouncements.

This is not conventional warfare. It is a new kind of guerrilla warfare where the virtual world is vital. A war of fantasies.

Why can't the west figure this out? The west knows how to create glamor - every day glamor (which all people seem to want i.e. selfies) which does not require a car or a fancy house or whatever. Glamor is an inner radiance of confidence and contentment and simple enjoyment of one's surroundings. The west knows how to create at least the image projection of that.

ISIS knows how to create and project images of glamor but it is a dark and not very happy or healthy fantasy and one which can claim no happy future. Sometimes, J, I think you are taken in (over impressed) by these glamor images without deeply considering the possible trajectories of them. Those trajectories do factor in to the glamor of the fantasies even tho they are rather subtle and easily missed. None of ISIS propaganda images posit a happy future or a peaceful fulfilling old age for the recruits. They are like fishing to put together a great frat house. They are anti-gender equality. They are anti-tolerant. They are the same old  -OLD- thing.

A good track record on winning the hearts and minds of Muslims in the M.E.

Also, I don't think that there is a video good enough to counteract the rhetoric and actions of many members of our Congress who clearly are against peaceful resolution of  conflicts in the M.E. and would prefer to wage war with all Muslims and bomb them into oblivion.

by any official government. ISIS is not an official government. This is not a conventional war. Any campaign to counter ISIS propaganda would not be to promote the US government including its congress. The west is tied into thinking in strict terms of nation-states as the only actors that could respond. That works to ISIS advantage.

doesn't know what fck they are doing in the M.E.

Muslims need to combat the ideology behind ISIS. What the West needs to do is to stop undermining their efforts, stop shrieking that the moderate Muslim Imans who preach that ISIL practices are contrary to the teachings of Islam are wrong, wrong, wrong and stop siding with the hardliners in Muslim countries and more than anything else stop promoting another war.
